This was a family build that i got to be apart of from the beginning and is what kickstarted my career in fine carpentry.
My journey into fine carpentry began with a significant family build, a commercial project that transformed my life and career. My father, the general contractor and owner, led the construction of a retirement home, while my brother served as the lead electrician. I was responsible for all the fine carpentry, a role that allowed me to immerse myself in the craft and develop my skills.
This experience was more than just constructing a building; it was about creating a welcoming space for future residents. I worked solo on this project, focusing entirely on the fine carpentry. The project was an immersive education in carpentry, from understanding architectural drawings to understanding the intricacies of different materials.
The challenges I faced, such as sourcing quality materials and perfecting my techniques, were opportunities for growth. Over the course of the project, I hung a couple hundred doors and installed thousands of linear feet of casing and wainscoting, Installed hundreds of handwear sets and had purchased almost every tool i needed to pursue my craft. Transforming raw materials into functional spaces became deeply satisfying, each piece I install is a testament to my dedication and craftsmanship.
By the end of the project, I had evolved from a novice to a confident craftsman, with a keen eye for design and a commitment to quality. This family build was the foundation of my career, instilling in me the values of dedication, precision, and the joy of creating meaningful work. Today, as a finish carpenter, I continue to bring the same passion and meticulous attention to detail to every project, crafting doors that enhance the beauty and character of any space.
